Introductory Outdoor Experiential Education Training Course

Fireside’s Ocean to Shoreline introductory course gives participants the basic skills they need to co-lead canoe trips in the outdoors and become competitive candidates for summer camps. This course is a great place to start if you have minimal or no training in outdoor activities and camping, and are looking for a fun and guided trip to help you hone in one those skills.

Certification obtained upon successful completion is composed by:

  • FWCC - Flat Water Canoe Certification.

  • OCE - Ocean Canoe Expedition through Sechelt Inlet.

 

The Diploma for completing the Residential Camping Course (RCC Diploma) includes:

Bonus: Indigenous Perspectives and Understanding Reconciliation - Workshop

  • Outdoor Survival Techniques and Outdoor Leadership including gear selection, orienteering, logistics, map reading, trip plans, fitness preparation, transportation and photography. Effective communications skills, Problem Solving.

  • WRM - Wilderness Risk Management including weather reading, emergency procedures, animal awareness, water treatment and basic first aid procedures.

  • Wilderness Cooking Lessons including food selection, cooking equipment, meal planning and keeping things clean.

Upon a succesful completion of the International Outdoor Experiential Education Training, the graduate will obtain direct access to one-on-one interviews with several (1-5) camp directors throughout British Columbia, in order to obtain a $200 Dollars Weekly Stipend Paid over the course of a 10-week long placement. 

DAY 1

 

  • 1:00pm arrival at Horseshoe Bay ferry terminal (instructor will be waiting for you)

  • Arrive in Sechelt (dinner) & last chance to buy personal equipment in town that you might have forgotten to pack

  • Paddle to Porpoise Bay (campsite and orientation)

  • All participants are given Ocean to Shoreline Guidebook and Climate Change Education and Outdoor Leadership Teacher’s Guidebook. 

  • Time for Q & A

 

DAY 2

  • Overview of outdoor recreation of BC     

  • Canoe skills module and practice

  • Indigenous perspectives module

  • Risk management workshops

  • Wilderness gourmet cooking lessons

  • Introduction to outdoor experiential education· 

  • Afternoon canoe skills and practice

  • Depart for canoe journey expedition

  • Fire starting and safety workshop

  • Stargazing and weather reading

DAY 3 -5

  • Sechelt Inlet canoe expedition and skill training

  • Outdoor skills (navigation, cloud reading, forest fires, finding water sources and risk management)·

  • Obtain flat water canoe certification

  • Return to Sechelt late afternoon

  • End of trip in afternoon of day 5
